Barcelona, Refuge City

"They aren't quotas', they're human lives. And if the states are reluctant to understand that then we, cities and citizens, are ready to move into action. Because we can... and we have to."

Ada Colau, the Mayor of Barcelona. Commitment to human rights, 1 September 2015.

The Plan

Barcelona is, and always has been, an open, welcoming city and it can help to alleviate the current crisis. We are getting ready to do that here but we are also helping where we are needed, cooperating and collaborating with other cities and municipalities.

Reception

Our city receives hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers, and the flow of arrivals is increasing. We are boosting the care we offer and setting up a programme with our own, comprehensive model for working with specialist organisations.

Action abroad

The City Council is coordinating and collaborating with other European municipalities and organisations working on the ground. We call on all states to comply with the human rights' law and open a safe, legal channel for people to reach Europe.
