Barcelona City Council leaves the social network X

City Council. All municipal accounts on X have been deactivated, with the exception of @bcn_ajuntament.
The City Council has deactivated nearly 80 of its municipal channels, leaving it with only one account, @bcn_ajuntament, which will be exclusively used to provide information on emergencies, weather alerts and traffic disruptions. The Mayor, Jaume Collboni, will sign a decree to put the measure into effect on Friday 31 January.
The decision was based on the city’s commitment to upholding the public’s right to access real and accurate information. We also aim to be at the forefront of technological humanism and digital democracy—principles that are incompatible with maintaining a presence on X (formerly Twitter), a platform mired in a spiral of disinformation and intolerance, posing a direct threat to democracy.
In response to these developments, the Mayor, Jaume Collboni, will sign a decree to close all of Barcelona City Council’s current accounts on X on Friday, 31 January, making it the first major Spanish city to adopt a measure recently implemented by other European capitals, institutions and media outlets.
The city will maintain a single provisional account on X, @bcn_ajuntament, which will be exclusively used to provide information on emergencies, weather alerts and traffic disruptions.
All municipal information will continue to be available through the City Council’s other official channels, including its website, newsletters and currently operational mobile apps.
